If you're 'mad for mod' and want to achieve this retro vintage look circa 2011, one important thing to know is that going 'MOD' will require more than acquiring the proper clothing. It's also about the hair & the makeup styles that were popular in the 1960's.
The most sought after hairstyles were the pixie and the fringe cuts, brought to light as a trend at that time by Twiggy and Edie Sedgwick. The pixie was boy'ish and sexy feminine whereas the fringe was a more messy take on the same style. Called the 'fringe' because of the choppy wispy bangs.
The basic 'cat eye' liner sometimes accentuated with white shadow on the lids along with big faux eyelashes to give your eyes the appeal of a doll is how you too can achieve the makeup vibe of that era. The doe eyed Twiggy was known for painting lashes underneath her own with eyeliner which is a bit extreme! After you've achieve the hair and mod make up, you should consider beginning to incorporate some mod'ness into your wardrobe and the first item you might want to purchase is a basic mini skirt. The mini is vintage and versatile and completely perfect as a starter piece and the bonus is, it has and never will go out of style!

The Spotlight's on Jennifer Aniston today as she was seen this weekend at a New York Sephora promoting her new fragrance line. Shades of orange are in for Summer 2011, so following suit to fashion trends, she was wearing a Vivienne Westwood bright tangerine strapless peep hole bodice straight line frock that wow'ed the crowd! The dress gets four stars however, I don't know that I agree with her decision to pair this number with silver strappies?...
My personal preference would have been the nude hued stilettos that have been showing up everywhere... Love these Fendi 'Natalia' mary jane slingback pumps!

"T.G.I.F." & Welcome to the weekend! Our Fashion In Film Friday topic is the 1988 movie 'Heathers' starring Winona Ryder. The movie was basically an 80's prequel of sorts to the popular current flick 'Mean Girls' (i.e. bad girl cliques verses the goody goodies). This popular 80's hit made school girl chic' a popular fashion trend that is now considered 'vintage'...
Plaid was popping up everywhere after the release of this film & 80's prep style was on the rise! Pleated skirts that sat just above the knee, colored opaque tights & ballerina flats all topped off with a fitted padded shouldered jacket. I remember this style all to well as I have to confess I actually dressed liked this!
I haven't seen this style make a return since it was once popular, but you just never know..It will probably come back on racks in the not too distant future. One lesson to be learned from following fashion trends is I always make sure to hang onto pieces that were once all the rage because "what's old always becomes new again....eventually."

When I think of Bohemian style in regards to fashion sense, I can't help but turn my thoughts to my personal 'fave', the ultimate hippie chic, Janis Joplin. Janis was an American born singer & songwriter who was ranked #46 out of 100 in 2004 by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 'Greatest Artists of All Time'... She was the true definition of a 'free spirit' and her flame flickered out way before it's time, but she left behind a her a legacy of music that defined an era of 'peace, love & harmony' in the midst of the Vietnam war.By no means would Joplin be referred to as a 'beautiful woman' by todays standards. But she was something special for sure in her own right! She had an amazing stage presence and aside from her obvious talent credentials, she became a fashion trend setter of the 60's. She influenced her generation as well as ours with her careless gypsy style. Once known as 'hippie' now called 'bohemian'. People were drawn to her sense of individuality and rebellion in opposition to what the status quo norm was...If anyone went against the grain, it was Janis as she definitely translated her personality through her sense of style.Janice's over the top, vivacious, without borders styles was all about 'excess'. Less was not more! She was all about feather boas, big floppy hats, big beaded necklaces, oversized shades and F.Y.I....she made bangles famous before Madonna did in the 80's! Enough of the Royal hoopla... it's time to get back on track here at Retro Threadz as we bring you Mod Monday once again! Today we're going to talk about fashion icon of the 60's, Edie Sedgwick... Edie was an American born actress, model, socialite and heiress who is mostly remembered for being Andy Warhol's 'muse' & was even considered a 'superstar' after appearing in several of his short art house films. Edie's life was the epitome of the 'poor little rich girl' who had it all but had nothing really being that she came from an extremely troubled home. All of this was said to have led to her battle with anorexia and substance abuse.
She met Warhol, the avante garde filmmaker/artist in March of 1965 and he immediately took a liking to her and set out to make her a star however, none of Warhol's films were commercially successful.
Edie may have failed on the big screen but she left her mark as a true fashion icon for her era as she was the epitome of the swinging 60's scene and a true founder of the beatnik style. She was young and definitely hip and no one had ever seen anything quite like her daring to wear nothing but a leotard, with opaque tights & a sweater! This fashion trend took off like wild fire!
It was reported in 1971 that Edie stopped abusing drugs and alcohol for a short time however, on November 15th, 1971 at the ripe old age of 28, she was said to have died from what was noted as 'undetermined/accident/suicide'. She was definitely the life of every party and lived hers in the fast lane...
She became a vintage legend style icon and even today, women try to emulate her fashion statement with a more contemporary flair.
