Amy Winehouse’s goddaughter performs at UK fest

Amy Whinehouse=EASTNOR CASTLE DEER PARK: Amy Winehouse’s 15-year-old goddaughter performed an outstanding set at the Big Chill music festival, mirroring her late mentor by closing her show with a cover of Winehouse’s ”Love Is a Losing Game.”

Dionne Bromfield got teary-eyed when she performed the song, barely able to sing its last few words, though the crowd cheered her on.

”She was an amazing singer,” Bromfield said. ”She was not only my godmother, but she was my mentor and my boss as well.”

The big-voiced singer sang with ease during her 30-minute performance on Saturday, the second day of the U.K. music festival.

Bromfield was a reminder of Winehouse: She stood close to the mic while belting lyrics, with her big hair and tiny build.

She was backed by a 5-piece band and dancers, performing songs from her two albums and singing mainly about boys and relationship troubles.

Her scratchy voice was top-notch as she sang soul songs with pop flavors, especially on the old-school sounding ”Remember Our Love” and the up-tempo ”Yeah Right.” She also performed covers of Cee Lo Green’s smash ”Forget You” ”and the Shirelles’ ”Mama Said,” Bromfield’s first single.

Winehouse, who had struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, was found dead of unknown causes at her London home on July 23.

Bromfield is signed to Winehouse’s label, Lioness Records.

Amy Winehouse - Officials Appeal For Return Of Amy Winehouse Street Signs

Amy Whinehouse=Officials in London are appealing for the return of a number of street signs which were stolen from around Amy Winehouse's home following her tragic death last month (Jul11).

Fans scrawled tributes on several signs close to the house in Camden, north London, where the singer was found dead on 23 July (11), and officials at Camden Council had planned to donate the plaques to Winehouse's family as a memorial.

However, four of the signs have been stolen, and council bosses are urging whoever is in possession of them to turn them into a police station.

Deputy council leader Sue Vincent tells the Bbc, "We are appealing to the good nature and conscience of the person or persons who stole the signs and are asking for them to be returned.

"We are not concerned with who took them, and will not be investigating this if we get them back. The signs can be returned to any police station in Camden and no questions will be asked."

A statement from the council adds, "Since Amy Winehouse's passing, fans have left messages on the signs, with the remaining street signs being given to the family."

The news comes as it emerged that Winehouse's relatives plan to turn the late star's house into the headquarters for a charity set up in her name. The Amy Winehouse Foundation's full mission statement will be unveiled on 14 September (11), on what would have been Winehouse's 28th birthday.

Amy Winehouse Reached Out To Dr. Drew

Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse performs onstage during The Miller Strat Pack concert, today Friday 24 September 2004, held at the Wembley Arena, London

Hastily researched and edited, Amy Winehouse: A Tribute had clearly been rushed so that it could be lapped up by fans wanting to squeeze every last drop of talent from the star even after she has gone.

Predictably, the hour-long programme zoomed through her not insignificant formative years and skimmed straight over her breakthrough album onto the dramatic rock 'n' roll lifestyle that proceeded it.

The documentary-makers clearly know that it's not just fans who'll be lapping it up; but also tabloid-readers looking to squeeze every last drop of scandal from Amy and her antics.

And ITV2 achieved this salacious style quite easily, but at some cost: the programme was poorly compiled to the extent that it was insulting to anyone with even a passing knowledge of Winehouse and her work.

For example, the narrator discussed the fresh-faced, drug-free Amy while showing photos of her several years later, visibly ravaged by substance abuse.

Almost more heartbreaking than Amy's tragic decline and demise is the queue of TV bosses and 'friends' apparently waiting in the wings to have their say - no doubt in return for some financial gain - on the life and death of the star.

Just six days after her death, Amy Winehouse: A Tribute was not the first documentary of its type and unfortunately, it will not be the last.

Amy Winehouse's father gives her clothes to fans

Spotlight Saturday - Amy Whinehouse

The soulful sultry voice of brit born Amy Whinehouse has been stifled long before its time as the 27 year old, best known for her old school sound and amazing contralto vocals was found dead this afternoon 4:00 UK time, in her home in Camden, London.  The cause of her passing remains 'unexplained' however, it's no secret that the young singer had an ongoing history with drugs & alcohol.  Whinehouse gained popularity in the UK several years before she came on the scene in America with her second album titled, 'Back To Black' in 2006.  Ironically, it wasn't until 2007, with her hit song 'Rehab' that she rose to fame here in the states.  Besides being noted for her vocal abilities, Amy was the muse to fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld.  She wasn't just the beehive, eyeliner and tattoos, she was an amazing talent who had the ability to infuse jazz, r&b and soul into every song she sang. .

Michael Douglas' health problems were all over the tabloids late last year, but after several predictions of his imminent demise, one of which came with a deadline that has already passed with the star still alive, the story was pretty much dropped. Now, Star has a grainy telephoto picture of him smoking and these headlines.
  • Smoking again and fighting for his life
  • Catherine struggles as they run away from it all

Meanest story nominee: Yet another premature story about the Jackie O tapes.

Publication: National Examiner
Date: 8 August 2011

Okay, let's get the facts out of the way first. There are tapes of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis that have not been released to the public. According to reliable sources, Caroline Kennedy will authorize their release this September.

Now we are expected to believe the low rent Examiner has a source that will tell us what's on them. They promise a look inside her "shattered life" and the secret of who was really behind the assassination of JFK.

This is a nominee for Meanest Story of the Week.

Meanest story nominee: Celeste Holm's nightmare

Publication: National Examiner
Date: 8 August 2011

Welcome to gossip hell, Miss Celeste Holm! I loved her so much in movies that were made before I was born, like All About Eve and Champagne for Caesar. Well now, it's the low rent Examiner that tells us her family is squabbling about her money and she may lose her home.

The good news is that this is not a Brave Last Days alert for the Academy Award winning actress, who tuned 94 last April.

Best wishes to Miss Holm, her friends and whatever family members who are not trying to rob her blind, from a fan.

This is a nominee for Meanest Story of the Week.

Good Mom Alert™: Angelina and the kids in London.

Publications: People, In Touch
Date: 8 August 2011

Fresh trash on Thursdays! I've written it many times before, but it bears repeating. Other people have to do something to get on the covers of The Only Ten Magazines That Matter. Angelina Jolie merely has to exist.

It's all about her and the kids this week, Brad is not mentioned. Here are the headlines.
  • People: Angie and the kids take London
  • In Touch: Angelina: Inside the Twins' World

Bells Are Ringing Alert™ and Rich People are Rich: This week's Jen and Justin news.

Publications: In Touch, Star
Date: 8 August 2011

Fresh trash on Thursdays! Two new stories about the Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux romance are in the supermarket rags this week, and they both point in the same positive direction. Here are the headlines.
  • In Touch: Jen & Justin: $60 million mansion
  • Star: Jen and Justin set the date (Exclusive)
I don't know if any of the stories can be trusted, but I do know with recent pictures, Justin has finally shaved off that ridiculous beard.

It may be his "deer in the headlights" look, but I'm going to have to get used to this. I imagine Jen feels the same.

Fussin' and Feudin' Alert™: Queen orders Camilla to stop bullying Kate!

Publication: Globe
Date: 8 August 2011

Fresh trash on Thursdays! Sorry for the weird picture. I was trying to find a shot of all three of the women in this story, Liz Windsor, Camilla Parker-Bee-otch and Long Tall Katy all together at once and this is the best I could do.

So, the Queen herself has stomped her mighty hoof and asked for the end of the alleged Camilla-Kate unpleasantness.

Though honestly, let's be fair. if Buckingham Palace, the very old building with the very sensitive feelings, wants to end the Camilla unpleasantness once and for all, it might take a high speed paparazzi chase in a Paris tunnel, if you know what I mean.

Pippa's British Bootie Envy!

Ever since she made her debut appearance in the public eye, Pippa Middleton has been a tabloid sensation. From the whispers that suggested she stole the show at the royal wedding, upstaging her sis Kate when she dutifully trailed behind her carrying her train during the nuptials, wearing the form fitting gown designed especially for her by Alexander McQueen,...to the recent 'bootie envy' that is said to be sending women everywhere in droves to their local plastic surgeons in hopes of getting a boost to lift their derrieres a' la Pippa style!
For years, boob jobs, nose jobs & face lifts have been the most sought after procedures when it comes to physical enhancements, however, as of late with the ever escalating popularity of celebs such as Jennifer Lopez & Kim Kardashian, buttocks related aesthetic procedures or 'ass'thetics' ha ha...has been taking precedence for about the past five years.  Grant it, Pippa has an awesome figure, but seriously what is up with the website I just happened upon called 'pippasass.com'?  I just don't get the whole 'ass envy' concept...do you?

Vintage Tapestry Fashions

When you say or hear the word 'tapestry', I'm sure a wall hanging of sorts comes to mind but tapestry fabric has been worn as clothing as far back as the middle ages in the era of castles and chivalry.  Tapestry in layman's terms is an intricate loom woven textile art that has been around for centuries, even dating back as far as the 3rd century BC as Greek tapestries have been discovered and preserved in desert of Tarim Basen.  The usual medium of choice for weaving tapestry is cotton or linen, but for more fancier fare, silk, gold & silver are often used.  It's amazing to look back now with wonder an awe as to how delicate the whole process was with the detailed art work performed with basic means in comparison to what is produced today with technology.  In February of this year, during Milan Fashion Week for Fall/Winter 2011, designer Veronica Etro went Medieval bringing a primitive vibe to tapestry styles...
There's such an absolute rich history behind the fabric that is tapestry and every once in a great while here at Retro Threadz, we are lucky enough to acquire a rare tapestry find.  Stop by the shop to see our new listings this week!  Featured as of yesterday, we are excited to add this 'Vintage 60's Tapestry Go-Go Boots & Handbag set to our collection!

Jessica Alba Hot Photos

Hive Jive

It was called 'the bouffant, the up-do & the B52', but the beehive that originated in Chicago in 1960 was the true definition of the 'big hair' fad that caught on like wild fire and gained world wide appeal.  The overly back combed, overly aqua netted style, was named the 'beehive' because it actually looks like a hive, or a nest of some sorts.  It's been said that part of the allure of the style is that it added the illusion of height to the wearer.  I know the history of the hive first hand as my mother who grew up in that era told me she sported the style when she was 16.  She said..."The higher the hive, the cooler you were considered to be".  The first girl group to get on board with this style was 'The Ronettes' but the trend lasted through to the late 70's with the emergence of the pop culture iconic group 'The B52's', as band members Kate Pierson & Cindy Wilson rocked their own retro version of the boof.
Well into the 80's it continued to trail blaze & continued to be re-popularized, especially after the cult John Waters film, 'Hair Spray' starring drag queen Divine & Ricky Lake was released, & over dramatized the 'do' to the hilt! & it made it's way back again with a re do of the popular movie from the same script starring John Travolta in drag & newcomer Nikki Blonsky in 2007.
In 2006, Amy Whinehouse stepped on the music scene with her signature style which was soon to be emulated by her female followers.  Her hair was what she was known for aside from her amazing other worldly vocal abilities. It was stated that her poof measured close to a half of a foot high!  In her whole career regardless of her state of being, you never saw her minus the hair-do.  She was quoted as saying ...  "My hair is always on point, even if the rest of me is really naff."
This vintage hairstyle just seems to keep evolving but has definitely come along way from it's beginnings when it was originally created by Margaret Vinci Heldt, winner of the 1954 National Coiffure Championship.
This variation of the style won an award at a British hairstyling competition in 2010 which is sheer proof that in years to come we're just going to keep seeing the style moving into new and exciting directions!
